As people gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, the American Red Cross gives thanks for the generous blood and platelet donors who roll up their sleeves to help patients in need throughout the year.

During the winter months and especially around the holidays, blood donations tend to decline. Long holiday weekends, like Thanksgiving, pose an extra challenge when many donors are traveling to be with family and friends. The Red Cross encourages people to make an appointment to donate blood or platelets and give the perfect gift to a patient this holiday season – the gift of life.

External Communications Manager, Bernadette Jay, sat down with Ashley from the Z MORNING ZOO to talk about the importance of giving and upcoming Thanks For Giving Blood Drive.

"The mission of American Red Cross Biomedical Services is to fulfill the needs of the American people for the safest, most reliable and most cost-effective blood services through voluntary donations. The Red Cross empowers ordinary people to perform extraordinary acts of service. Our blood donors are ordinary people — high school students, factory and office workers, business executives, parents and grandparents, and people from every walk of life. But they share one thing: a generous spirit, a desire to give back to their community and help others. Blood donors play an integral role in the delivery of modern health care. Many lifesaving medical treatments and procedures involve blood transfusions and would not be possible without a safe and reliable blood supply."
