Want to frolic with puppies in Paradise?

Potcake Place K-9 Rescue: Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

February 8, 2018

As you know we just got back from Turks & Caicos, and I experienced one of the best things ever… A PUPPY DATE ON THE BEAUTIFUL ISLAND!

Yes, you can frolic with rescue dogs on the beach as part of a special program run by dog rescue charity Potcake Place!! The program not only gives tourists and prospective owners some puppy time, it also has important perks for the dogs, which ultimately help them get adopted; It helps with socializing the pup and to build their personality!!!

Nestled in a little shopping center in Providenciales, the line to have a puppy date with one of these dogs starts as early as 8:30AM.. When doors don’t open till 10AM!

Kyle and I arrived, and we were assigned MARY, the sweetest little island princess. We were given a little puppy diaper bag with toys, treats, food, poopy bags and water… and then sent off for whatever adventure we wanted!

Of course, there are rules involved to keep the dogs safe. The pups can only be out for two hours at a time and those playing with them cannot force the dogs to do anything that may make them uncomfortable. They must also be on a leash at all times

Perhaps the best part of this is the success the shelter’s had in getting the pooches adopted from both locals and tourists who have fallen in love with the dogs.

Potcake is the name given to the dogs of the Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands. It came about because the locals fed the caked remains of the cooking pot to the dogs. As generations have passed, Potcakes have evolved into a breed which is extremely smart, loyal and loving.

Potcakes are rescued from around the islands of the Turks & Caicos. Litters of puppies as well as individual pups are found wandering without their littermates. They may be found by tourists while they are out exploring, or locals in their backyard or while working on construction sites.

Potcake Place is a Providenciales, Turks & Caicos based dog rescue organisation. It was first set up in a home on Providenciales, which has fostered puppies for many years. They are a Non-Profit organization made up of a group of volunteers who want to help these rescued potcakes. They take pups to the vet, and give them all vaccinations, wormers and other treatments appropriate for their age. They look after these Potcakes in their own homes until a permanent home can be found. Their policy is to house the pets for as long as it takes to find the best home.

They socialize the pups with beach trips, and organize dog training where necessary. They meet potential adoptive families for a play session with the pups. If an adoption goes ahead, They take the pup to the vet to arrange a health certificate, book the pup on to the plane, and meet the families at the airport. They also spend time finding volunteers to transport the pup if the family are not visiting the island.

The aim is to increase the chances of finding a place for every Potcake. They hope Potcake Place can grow to involve more foster homes and to continue an adoption program.
