Protect Yourself From Viruses With These Antiviral Foods

Everyone recently has been trying to get their hands on face masks to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, but did you know there is an even more in-depth and easy way to do this too?

As the famous Greek physician Hippocrates once said, “Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.”

Simply eat FOOD that are anti-viral everyday! Now, I’m not saying don’t wear face masks...this is a necessary measure to be taking right now, and of course maintaining social distancing and washing your hands, but often times we forget that the best medicine and preventative measures come from what we put into our bodies.


Here are some of my favorite super foods and herbs that you should think about adding to your daily meals:


1. Garlic- anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and most effective against viruses if chewed raw.


2. Green Tea- contains catechins, which can inhibit viral infections by blocking the enzymes that allow it to reproduce.


3.Licorice- has a something called glycyrrhizin that reduces the replication of viruses and doesn't allow them to penetrate replicate inside healthy cells.


4. Ginger- anti-viral, anti bacteria, and can flush out they body’s toxins.


5. Sage- the antiviral properties of sage can be found in compounds called safficinolide, which are found in the leaves and stem of the plant.


6. Basil- contains antiviral compounds like apigenin and ursolic acid.


7. Peppermint- the leaves and essential oils contain menthol and rosmarinic acid, which have antiviral and anti-inflammatory activity.


8. Rosemary- has therapeutic and antiviral properties due to its numerous plant compounds, including oleanolic acid.


9. Turmeric- contains curcumin that has antiviral properties.


10. Olive Leaves- one of the most abundant sources of oleuropein, that have proved to have significant effects against respiratory viruses.


Honorable mention- Honey- while not an antiviral food, it has everything else you could want that makes your body a healthy BEAST: it’s a good source of antioxidants, antibacterial, antifungal, and can heal wounds.


What I do every morning is make an “anti-viral potion”: I steep green and turmeric tea with basil leaves and lemon juice, and add some honey in there for good measure. Then I gargle with warm salt water and a small amount of apple cider vinegar.


On top of eating well, it’s also recommended to gargle daily for preventative measures:

“Gargling lowers the viral load, leaving your body with fewer invaders to replicate. Gargle with organic apple cider vinegar. Cold’s and flu often start in the throat or the nasal cavities.”
