Where To Celebrate Juneteenth In Hampton Roads

June 17, 2020
Juneteenth 2

As many of you know, Juneteenth was just made a state holiday by Governor Northam, which is this Friday!

Sign this petition to have Juneteenth recognized as a National holiday (something that should’ve happened ages ago, but we’ll get there) :

The history of Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day:

Union soldiers came to Texas in 1865 to notify that slavery had ended due to President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Texas’s 250,000 enslaved people were free. The actual news was issued in 1979, but it took two and a half years for the message to reach Texas. The state also became the first in the country to recognize Juneteenth as an official holiday in 1979.

I found a bunch of events around the Hampton Roads area that are celebrating this monumental day here:

Changes are happening, and we're just getting started! So many reasons to celebrate! -Chelsea
